Climate-smart enterprise evidence for investors and programmes
Climate-smart businesses in Kenya raise money on claims about where they operate, who they serve and what weather pressure their customers face. Those claims are about place, and they are rarely evidenced. Mavuno puts the service area, the land around it and the weather conditions on a map.
The pack compares the service area you describe with what the land and settlements actually look like, adds rainfall and seasonal conditions, and shows whether the customer base makes sense on the ground. Everything is dated and sourced, so the same area can be looked at again later to show real change.
This helps investment committees, funds and business advisors who need something firmer than a story but faster and cheaper than a field study. Mavuno adds to your own checks rather than replacing them, and it makes no claim about a company's climate impact.
Businesses selling climate-smart products and services usually describe their target areas in words. Funders and programmes want to see where those areas are and what surrounds them.
Much of that can be checked on a map long before anyone pays for a field survey.
Questions we hear
- Where are your target areas, and how big are they?
- What is being grown around the area you want to serve?
- Which parts of the area face the most difficult weather?
- Does your depot and agent coverage match where you say demand is?
- Which area should be tackled first?
What we can show
What Mavuno adds to the question.
Drawn from free public satellite and rainfall information, plus whatever the business chooses to share with us.
- What each area looks like
- What the land looks like across the areas you want to serve.
- Weather and risk
- How much rainfall varies across the area you plan to serve.
- Coverage of your service area
- How well your depots and agents cover the areas you are targeting.
- Comparing areas
- A side-by-side view of the areas you are choosing between.
How it runs
From your question to your answer.
- 01Ask: agree the targeting or expansion question.
- 02Locate: set the candidate areas and the service footprint.
- 03Understand: compare land, crops and rainfall across each area.
- 04Explain: set the areas side by side, with the limits stated plainly.
- 05Decide: you receive the pack to support the targeting decision.
Example
What a pack might answer.
Business question
Which of these three candidate service zones has the most supportive agricultural context?
Three candidate zones across central and eastern Kenya
What the pack would show
- Cultivated-land signal share per zone
- Rainfall variability across recent seasons
- Vegetation seasonality profile per zone
- Relative concentration of productive land
What you gain from it
A comparative view that helps a team sequence expansion, with clearly stated uncertainty about what the satellite signal can and cannot resolve.
Limitations
- This example is illustrative. It is not an assessment of any real business.
- Satellite information shows physical conditions, not commercial facts.
- Every real pack states its own limits, for its own place.
Common questions
Asked before a pilot.
- Can Mavuno measure a company's climate impact?
- No. It describes the physical and weather conditions of the places a business works in. Attributing impact to a company needs measurement that goes well beyond satellite pictures.
- What geography does a pack cover?
- Whatever you and the business agree: a site boundary, a service area, a supply area or a route. The area is fixed before we look at anything.
- How current is the data?
- Every observation carries its date. How often a satellite sees a place depends on its orbit and the cloud, so each pack states the dates behind each finding. Nothing here is a live feed.
Where it is used
Who uses this evidence.
- Grant and results-based finance targeting
- Investor diligence on market-sizing claims
- Programme design and zone prioritisation
